Seeds to buy and plant, plus more things to in the garden this week – Orange County Register

Personal Injury Attorney

Five things to do in the garden this week:

1. If you have problems with rabbits or deer munching on your plants, you may want to get some Liquid Fence. You spray it on your plants every few weeks unless there is heavy rain, after which an additional application will be necessary. Procure the concentrate, as opposed to the pre-mixed product, in order to save money. Other than constructing an eight foot fence around your property, many gardeners claim that this is the only product that truly works in keeping deer, as well as rabbits, out of the garden. It produces a foul odor following application, but the smell dissipates after one day.

2. Now is the time to plant seeds that germinate with ease. These are seeds that you just scatter over the ground and, if you wish, press into the soil by stepping on them so they are more solidly in place when  watered — whether by watering can, spray attachment at the end of a hose, or by rain. The seeds of nearly all poppy species may be planted this way, including California poppies (Eschscholzia California), Shirley or Flander’s Fields poppies (Papaver rhoeas), Oriental poppies (Papaver oreintale), and breadbox poppy (Palaver somniferous). In truth, the dew that settles on the ground in December may be sufficient moisture to germinate these seeds. The exception are the seeds of Iceland poppies (Papaver nudiflorum). Since this species is native to cold climates, the seeds of your garden-grown Iceland poppies must be stratified or exposed to cold or refrigerated (due to our mild winter climate) for one month in order to germinate. Sweet alyssum (Lobular maritime), larkspur (Consolidated ajacis), and cornflower or bachelor’s button (Centaurea cyan’s) are similarly easy to germinate.

3. Order flower and vegetable seeds now, to be planted before the rains come. One of the sources for vegetable and flower seeds you will want to examine is Seed Savers Exchange ( All the varieties sold are heirlooms and have been around for at least 50 years. Heirloom varieties are open-pollinated, meaning that the seeds in an heirloom variety tomato, when planted, will yield a plant whose tomatoes are of the same quality as that of the tomato from which they were extracted. This is in contrast to hybrids. If you plant seeds of a hybrid tomato, the plants growing from them will yield fruit likely to be of inferior quality to that of the tomato from which they came.
